McKinney store My Vinyl Craft fills local crafting void

Two years ago while driving home from another 66-mile trip to buy vinyl from Dallas for crafting, Stacia Goss found herself stuck in traffic. Again.

“I thought, someone needs to open a vinyl store in north Dallas. But I was terrified about that because it is a lot of responsibility,” she said.

Goss had been running a vinyl business from her home for a few years. Like many people with at-home vinyl businesses, Goss bought her first vinyl cutting machine so she could make things for herself, family and friends. Before long, she was working full-time filling orders for other people. As demand increased, she launched a home business.

She said her idea of opening a store front simmered on the back burner for months. Goss said she knew if she told her husband, Matt Goss, he would make her do it. During the 19 years they have been married, she said they often kicked around the idea of starting their own business.

As expected, when she told him in June 2019, he said: “That’s amazing! Let’s do it!”

The couple signed a lease in September 2019 and opened My Vinyl Craft on Dec. 6, 2019.

Their barely established business model changed in the early months of the pandemic, when they could offer only curbside pickup.

“Everyone was home and bored, so it boosted our business quite a bit. We exceeded our expectations,” Goss said.

When they were allowed to reopen their doors, store manager Mandi Thoma, who had been hired in January 2020, was able to return. They also hired three part-time employees.

Most of their customers are McKinney residents; however, they frequently have out-of-state customers, Goss said.

The wide vinyl selection, low prices and location are what bring customers in the first time, she said. What brings them back is the customer service.

“We treat them like we want to be treated,” Goss said. “It’s very important to me to keep that small-town, small-business feel no matter how big we get.”
