Amazon adding 3,000 new tech and corporate jobs in Boston with lease of new 17-story office tower

Amazon plans to add 3,000 jobs in Boston over the next several years, leasing a new 17-story office tower in the Boston Seaport project to accommodate the further expansion of technology and corporate jobs beyond its original Seattle headquarters.

The expansion, announced Tuesday morning, includes roles working on Alexa, Amazon Web Services, Amazon Robotics and Amazon Pharmacy. The new 630,000-square foot tower is slated for completion in 2024.

Amazon currently employs 3,700 people in its Boston Tech Hub, part of its workforce of more than 20,000 people in Massachusetts. The company previously leased the 430,000-square-foot Boston Seaport building, due to open later this year, with room for 2,000 employees.

With its total workforce of employees and seasonal workers now topping 1 million people globally, Amazon has been increasingly looking beyond its Seattle headquarters campus for growth in engineering, product management and corporate jobs. The company has clashed with the Seattle City Council at times in recent years over the city’s efforts to institute new taxes to help fund human services, among other measures.

Amazon is also in the midst of a major expansion in Bellevue, Wash., where it announced plans in September to add 10,000 new jobs, taking the future total there to 25,000 jobs. In August, the company said it plans to add a total 3,500 tech and corporate jobs in Dallas, Denver, Detroit, New York City, Phoenix, and San Diego.

Boston was among the finalists in Amazon’s second headquarters search, commonly known as “HQ2,” which ultimately landed in Alexandria, Va.
